Human sweat contains a variety of substances, including blood sugar and urea, so monitoring the level of such substances in sweat helps doctors better diagnose and monitor chronic diseases including diabetes, kidney disease and some cancers. However, many wearable health devices are currently less accurate and too bulky, affecting patient use.
The team led by Glasgow University professor Lavend Dahia designed a new sensor that monitors the pH of sweat. The sensor is made of a graphite-polyurethane composite material. It is not only lightweight, but also has excellent stretch characteristics. The length can be stretched by 53%, which is suitable for patients to wear for a long time.
The sensor also uses near-field communication technology to wirelessly transmit monitoring data to smartphone applications, allowing healthcare professionals to monitor patient-related values ​​in real-time using mobile devices such as smartphones.
Dahia said that human sweat and blood contain many of the same physiological information, and detecting sweat can save the trouble of penetrating the skin to collect blood samples for testing.
Next, the team will try to expand the performance of this sensor, making it a complete diagnostic system that ultimately monitors blood glucose, ammonia and urea levels in sweat.
