Rohde & Schwarz supports future mobile communication network 5G test solutions

Munich, February 19, 2016 – Although the 5G communication standard is still being explored and discussed, it is certain that it is necessary to transmit a very wide bandwidth signal in the millimeter wave band. Rohde & Schwarz supports a number of research activities that use this spectrum for 5G.

At the 2016 World Mobile Congress in Barcelona (MWC2016), the electronic measurement team will demonstrate the generation and analysis of broadband signals in the millimeter-wave band. The R&S SMW200A is the industry's first single-table vector signal generator with a center frequency up to 40 GHz and a bandwidth of up to 2 GHz, making the construction of an ultra-wideband signal generation hardware platform without the need for an additional baseband arbitrary waveform generator. The combination of the R&S FSW signal and spectrum analyzer and the R&S RTO oscilloscope is capable of analyzing wideband signals up to 85 GHz and bandwidths up to 2 GHz, which is unique in the industry.

Another solution is to generate and analyze 5G air interface signals. Although OFDM technology is now used for LTE downlink signals, it does not meet all the technical requirements of 5G. Popular options for 5G air interface technology include: UFMC, GFDM, FBMC and f-OFDM. These alternative techniques aim to increase the adjacent channel rejection ratio and, in addition, modify existing OFDM parameters, such as higher subcarrier offsets, to have the potential to be used in the millimeter wave band. The R&S SMW200A vector signal generator allows users to easily generate 5G air interface signals. The R&S FS-K196 vector signal analysis software extends the demodulation capabilities of signal and spectrum analyzers by adding UFMC, GFDM and f-OFDM signals.

5G technology will greatly expand the signal bandwidth.
