The simple Zener shunt in A may not handle enough current in the case of a low power of the Zener. As shown in Figure B, a power transistor does most of the work of the Zener. Once the Zener tube begins to conduct, the bias voltage flows through the resistor (330 Ω to 1K), turning on the transistor. The output voltage is 0.7V, which is greater than the Zener voltage.
