According to reports, Uber admitted that the software called "Geryball" could help drivers identify and evade law enforcement personnel in areas where their services are not approved, such as Portland, Oregon.

According to reports, the "New York Times" of the United States disclosed in March the existence of "Geryball" software. Shortly after the report appeared, Uber prohibited the use of "Geryball" software for this purpose, and stated that the program was created to check passenger requests to prevent fraud and protect drivers. This disclosure by The New York Times triggered a series of negative reports on Uber.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s criminal investigation may cause Uber to face serious problems, and the company is currently stuck in a series of business and legal issues.

A Uber spokesman and the U.S. Department of Justice declined to comment. Uber’s lawyer said in a letter to the Portland government that Uber Service was approved in the city in 2015, but prior to this “Greyball” software was used “very limitedly” in the local area. This letter was made public by Portland last week.

According to sources, the investigation of the federal criminal offences and alleged perpetrators of any possibility is still unclear and the investigation is still in its initial stage. (Internship Compilation: Kang Han reviewer: Tan Liya)
