
In-Stat pointed out that USB 3.0 will be more widely used in the mobile PC field, mainly driven by AMD's just released first native USB 3.0 chipset A70M, and Intel will also natively support next year's Ivy Bridge chipset. USB 3.0.
In-Stat research director Brian O'Rourke said: “Mobile phones are the main driver of USB and will play an important role in the popularity of USB 3.0. In 2010, more than 1.2 billion mobile phones have internal USB, most of which are USB 2.0. In addition, the number of mobile phone USB interfaces exceeds 100 million. The first USB 3.0 interface mobile phones may not be available until the end of 2013, and they will use a new interface form to replace the current mini USB."
Some other points reported by In-Stat:
- In 2010, total USB device shipments exceeded 3.5 billion units.
- USB 2.0 is still the most popular USB interface, with more than three-quarters of its share in 2010.
- Chipset native support is a key factor in the acceptance of the new USB standard because it can significantly reduce the cost of PC OEMs.
- Consumer electronics are still the focus of USB, including digital cameras, digital TVs, set-top boxes, portable players, and more.
