Road arches are generally used for vehicle deceleration, and the bumps it causes make the rider feel uncomfortable, but they can generate kinetic energy. The British "Guardian" said that the new road arches vary in size from 20,000 to 55,000 pounds. The road arch relies on a panel that is flush with the road surface. When the vehicle passes over it, the panel undulates and drives a gear in the ground to generate mechanical energy. They can also be placed flush with the ground and are not felt when the vehicle passes by.
A stable traffic can generate 10 to 36 kilowatts of electricity. These road arches generate between 1 and 3.6 pounds per hour, and can operate for 16 hours a day, generating $5,840 to 21,024 pounds a year. Energy that is not used in time can be stored or transported to the national power grid.
Hughes said: As long as there is a steady flow of traffic, four new road arches can make street lights, traffic lights and road license plates on a 1 mile (1.6 km) long street, and 10 new road arches are equivalent to a wind turbine. For vehicles, these road arches are noiseless, comfortable and safe. This is not only green energy, but also free energy, only the upfront capital costs. Therefore, they have huge use space.
A spokesman for the Ealing Parliament in West London confirmed that the area is about to invest £150,000 to implement the new road arch plan from 2009 to 2010. However, details such as the number of road arches and the location of the road are still uncertain.
Hughes said he has discussed green road arch plans with more than 200 local councils. The supermarket chain Morrisons also intends to set up some of its warehouses in Kent.
The United Kingdom began using road arches in 1981. There are 30,000 in London, and other cities are no less than this number. Traditional road arches cost about £2,000 each.
