Digital programmable linear regulator LT3071 function introduction

Linear Technology CorporaTIon introduces the second device in the digitally programmable linear regulator series LT3071, which has the lowest dropout voltage, lowest noise and fastest among the currently available monolithic 5A LDOs Transient response. The dropout voltage at 5A is an ultra-low 85mV. In the bandwidth of 10Hz to 100kHz, the output voltage noise at 5A is only 25uVRMS. With the 1MHz unity gain bandwidth of the LT3071 and its minimum ceramic output capacitance of 15uF, for a fast 4.5A output load step, only a 30mV overshoot / undershoot is generated, thereby saving a lot of body capacitance, space and cost. The LT3071 is ideal for efficiently supplying low-voltage, high-current devices (such as FPGAs, DSPs, ASICs, and microprocessors), sensitive communications power supplies, server / storage, and post-buck regulation applications.

The output voltage of the LT3071 can be set digitally, with a setting range of 0.8V to 1.8V (in 50mV increments). Its accuracy is strictly specified as ± 1% over the entire voltage, load and temperature range. The analog output margin control function can adjust the system output voltage within a continuous range of ± 10%, which is very beneficial during system development and debugging. A PowerGood flag indicates whether the output voltage is in a stable state or whether the device is in the UVLO state. This flag also provides an early warning indication of thermal failure. An output current monitor provides a proportional dynamic representation of the output current (IOUT / 2500), which can be measured directly, or can be terminated and converted to a voltage using a resistor, allowing calculation of load conditions or power. The LT3071's input supply voltage range is 0.95V to 3.0V, and its bias supply voltage range is 2.2V to 3.6V. The bias power supply provides gate drive to the internal NMOS pass device.

Multiple LT3071 devices can be easily connected in parallel to achieve greater output current and dissipate heat throughout the circuit board. The tracking function can control a buck regulator that supplies power to the LT3071 input. This tracking function drives the upstream buck regulator to maintain the LT3071 input voltage at VOUT + 300mV, thereby minimizing power consumption. If the output voltage changes dynamically, the tracking function automatically adjusts the output voltage of the buck regulator to keep the efficiency unchanged. Internal protection circuits include UVLO, reverse current protection, accurate current limit with power supply foldback, and thermal shutdown with hysteresis.

The LT3071 is packaged in a thermally enhanced, low profile (0.75mm) 28-lead 4mm x 5mm QFN package. Class E and I devices operate in a junction temperature range of -40 ° C to + 125 ° C. Purchased in batches of 1,000 pieces, the prices of the two devices are $ 4.20 and $ 4.80 per piece, respectively.
