Linear Technology Corporation (Linear Technology Corporation) second generation of the high voltage battery monitor LTC? 6803, of the device for a hybrid / electric vehicle (the HEV), electric vehicles (EV) and other high-voltage, high-performance battery system. The LTC6803 is a complete battery measurement IC that includes a 12-bit ADC, a precision voltage reference, a high voltage input multiplexer, and a serial interface. Each LTC6803 can measure up to 12 individual battery cells connected in series. The device's proprietary design allows multiple LTC6803s to be stacked in series without the need for optocouplers or isolators, allowing accurate voltage monitoring of each cell in a long series of serially connected cells. The LTC6803 is a new product after the introduction of the LTC6802 in September 2008. The LTC6802 has proven to have a good track record, and the LTC6803 has the same features and pinout configurations, and has achieved many improvements in performance.

The LLT6803's maximum total measurement error is guaranteed to be less than 0.25% over the -40°C to 125°C temperature range. The LTC6803 offers an extended battery measurement range from -300mV to 5V, enabling monitoring of a wide range of battery chemistries and supercapacitors. Each cell is monitored for undervoltage and overvoltage conditions, and an associated MOSFET can be used to discharge an overcharged battery. A built-in 5V regulator, temperature sensor, GPIO line and thermistor input provide additional functionality.

Erik Soule, vice president of signal conditioning products at Linear Technology, said: "Today, our reputable battery monitor series has been in this field for more than two years, and we are pleased to offer this enhanced product LTC6803. Global automakers and other customers have embraced Linear Technology's rugged battery pack monitors, and we believe this new member of the series will provide superior performance for the next generation of HEVs and EVs."

"The LTC6803 meets the latest needs of precision high performance battery packs. It ensures accurate, safe, reliable and error-free operation in harsh automotive environments," said Mike Kultgen, Design Manager, Linear Technology.

For long-term storage of battery packs, the current consumed by the integrated battery management system (BMS) may unbalance the battery pack capacity. The LTC6803 eliminates this concern in standby mode, which consumes less than 12uA. In addition, the LTC6803's power input is isolated from the battery pack, allowing the device to draw current from a separate supply. When powered from this input, the current drawn from the battery pack drops to less than 1uA.

The LTC6803 is designed to exceed the environmental, reliability and safety requirements of automotive and industrial applications. The device's specifications are fully specified for the operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. It is designed for systems that conform to the ISO26262 (ASIL) standard, and a complete set of self-tests ensures that no faults will occur. To comply with this standard, the LTC6803 includes a redundant voltage reference, extensive logic test circuitry, open-wire detection capability, and a watchdog timer for fail-safe design. Designed to withstand voltages up to 75V, the LTC6803 provides over 20% overvoltage margin for a complete battery string with 12 cells. The 1MHz serial interface features packet error checking and is designed to operate in environments with large amounts of noise and transients.

The LTC6803 is available in a small 8mm x 12mm surface mount package. The sample price is $9.95 per piece. Samples, demo boards and data sheets are available at and The LTC6803 is available in production quantities.
